Is Halloween the Best Holiday?

Amiah Dugas, Writer

Many people believe that Halloween is the best holiday that we celebrate.

People are free to dress up as anything they want.  It’s just a day where you can relax, sit back, watch movies, and shove your face with loads of candy.

One of the reasons Halloween is so great is because you can dress up. When dressing up, you can decide on what you want to be and how much energy you put into it. On Halloween, you can dress up as anything you can imagine; it can be real, or it can be imaginary like a unicorn or a witch. In the end, when you are wearing your costume, no one can judge you because that is what the day is about.

While not an official holiday, the traditional October 31 Halloween celebration is much beloved by children in the United States, for whom the day is to dress up, and to collect candy and other treats from adults.

Halloween’s origins can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain, which was held on November 1 in contemporary calendars. It was believed on that day, the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off spirits. In this way, popular Halloween tropes such as witches, ghosts, and goblins became associated with the holiday. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory lll designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon all Saints day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Our time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, costumes and eating treats.
