This is the 1st time an ice shelf has collapsed since the satellites started observing Antarctica almost half a century ago. It was said to be caused by a record low sea level and unusual weather. According to scientists, “Ice shelves are extensions of ice sheets that float over the ocean, playing an important role in restraining inland ice. Without them, inland ice flows faster into the ocean, resulting in sea level rise.” This is definitely something that will need to be watched as time goes on.
