Augustus Nathaniel Lushington

Augustus Nathaniel Lushington was born on August 1, 1869 and was the first African American to earn Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Lushington was born in the south Caribbean of the island of Trinidad. Lushington had many careers in his life before he became a veterinarian. First, he went to teacher-training school and worked in classrooms for several years before becoming the principal. He eventually went to the United States to find different and better job opportunities. After marrying his wife, Elizbeth Hubert, he got his degree in agriculture. Since there weren’t many job opportunities for him because of where he lived and his degree, he later went to college and received a degree in veterinary medicine. I plan to get my degree in veterinary medicine in the future, and Augustus Nathaniel Lushington inspires me greatly. It shows that anyone can do anything, no matter your race, gender, or social class.
